John was a vibrant young man who was at the "top of his game". He played drums with
the South Forsyth Marching War Eagles Band and Concert Band, Cross Country track,
and had been training for Spring Track the afternoon of his accident. In addition he
enjoyed working in Children's Church at First Baptist Church Cumming. Then
everything changed.
I had paid for John to have Driver's Education at Gainesville College the summer before
he got his license in August. He wasn't out after curfew, no alcohol was involved, nor
was he speeding, and he was wearing his seat belt. He was only about 2 miles from
school. John was doing everything "right" but was tired and ready to get home after
track. How many times do we as adults feel the same way after a day at work? Accidents
happen. John came to a "rolling stop" was what the officer said. His little Ford Tempo
without air bags (they didn't have them for that model year) couldn't stand up against the
Chevy Surburban.
He lived less than 36 hours after the accident, but John was also an organ donor so in a
way, he lived(s) through others. On Valentine's Day 1998, John gave the gift of life. A
man received his heart and one kidney, and another lady received his liver. John literally
gave his heart away on Valentine's Day. His death has changed the lives of many people.
Without God, my family and friends I could not have made it nor could I continue.
Never in a millions years did I think this would happen to me. I learned never to take life
for granted. Oh how I would love to hear hm say again "mom I need a hug'--but
someday I will.
