Hi, let me introduce myself to you. My name is Alicia King, I wonder if you have ever thought about the goals in life you want to accomplish? Turning 16 and getting your own car is probably tops on the list. How about graduating from high school? Turning 18 and becoming a legal adult, is it on the list too? Hey, lets throw in college and a degree so you can get a real great job making mega money. What about getting married and having a baby? The list can grow, it will be different for each one of us. Yes, it all seems like a dream, but you can accomplish it. I can't.
I was able to attain a couple of my goals. I turned 16 and got a car. I got married and had a beautiful baby boy. But now let's talk about turning 18. A time to celebrate, become a legal adult. Now I can make my own decisions. No one can tell me what to do. Oh yes, that's an important goal, but it is one I was never able to see come true. The night before my 18th birthday I went out with two friends to celebrate my birthday. We ate dinner and had a couple drinks. On the way home we were in a one car accident. Thirty minutes before I was to turn 18 it all ended for me. I laid in a coma for five days and never regained consciousness. On June 11, 1999, I lost my life. The driver survived with no injuries and another passenger died instantly. Some way to celebrate, huh?
The cause of the accident was reckless driving. Police reports say 110+ mph, alcohol in the system of the driver and the presence of marijuana all contributed to the accident. The driver's blood alcohol content was only .08. He had only "a few". Hey, he wasn't even legally drunk. It's okay to ride with
him, right? WRONG!!!
Before you get behind the wheel or into a car, think about your goals. Make sure it won't be the last ride. Think about me and the family I left behind. My son who I will never get to tell how much I love him. Don't make that ride your last ride. |
